How Clear Brand Positioning Can Transform Your Marketing.

Brand positioning is one of those things businesses often know they should have, but can find surprisingly difficult to define.

At its simplest, brand positioning is the place you want your brand to occupy in the mind of your ideal customer. It defines who you are, who you are for, what makes you different, the value you represent and how you want to be perceived.

It’s not just your product or service. And it’s not just your logo, colours or tagline.

Your brand personality, tone of voice, visual identity, pricing, messaging and customer experience should all work together to reinforce that position.

Clear Brand Positioning Can Transform Your Marketing.

What do you want to be known for?

Strong positioning gives customers a clear reason to choose you over the alternatives.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to offer something nobody else does. It means identifying the space you can make your own.

-          What do you do particularly well?

-          What matters most to your customers?

-          What are your competitors already saying?

-          And where is the white space?

That might be expertise, quality, simplicity, service, speed, specialisation, innovation, value or something else entirely.

The important thing is being clear about it.

Your positioning also affects your pricing

If you want to charge a premium, your brand needs to support that position.

Your website, messaging, service, customer experience and visual identity all need to reinforce the value you’re asking customers to pay for.

Equally, if your position is built around affordability, accessibility or convenience, that needs to come through clearly too.

Neither is right or wrong. It depends on your audience, what they value and what they are prepared to pay.

Positioning gives your marketing direction

Once your positioning is clear, it becomes a filter for almost every marketing decision.

Does this campaign sound like us?

Are we targeting the right people?

Does our website communicate what we want to be known for?

Does our social media tell the same story as our sales material and customer experience?

Your channels don’t need to look or sound identical, but they should feel like they belong to the same brand.

Without that clarity, marketing can quickly become a collection of disconnected activities rather than one consistent story.

What is a brand positioning statement?

A brand positioning statement takes the broader thinking behind your brand positioning and distils it into one clear, concise statement that captures who you’re for, what makes you different and the value you want to be known for.

A simple structure is:

For [target audience], [brand] is the [category or solution] that [key benefit or point of difference], because [reason to believe].

Once that thinking is clear, it can guide your value proposition, messaging, tone of voice, visual identity and broader marketing strategy.

Some of the strongest brands are also some of the clearest. Volvo has long been associated with safety. Aldi is strongly associated with value and simplicity. Apple has built a position around design, innovation and a premium customer experience.

They are very different positions, but each gives customers a clear idea of what the brand stands for.

Why it can be hard to define your own positioning

One of the biggest challenges is that businesses are often simply too close to their own brand.

You know the history, the products, the service, the capabilities and everything happening behind the scenes. Your customers don’t.

They only see what you communicate.

That can make it surprisingly difficult to step back and identify what really differentiates you, what matters most to your audience and what you should be known for.

This is where an outside perspective can help.

A brand positioning workshop or one-on-one strategy session with a marketing consultant can help you challenge assumptions, look objectively at your customers and competitors, identify your strongest point of difference and turn it into clear positioning you can actually use.

The goal isn’t to invent a new version of your business.

It’s to get much clearer about what already makes it valuable, relevant and different, and then make sure your marketing communicates it consistently.

You experience your brand from the inside. Your customers experience it from the outside. Strong brand positioning needs to work from both perspectives.
